SAIL Footscray is having twice as much fun!

The division of SAIL Footscray into the Maidstone Community Centre and the Darnley St Hall has completed the journey from May St that we embarked upon earlier in the year! The two campuses are operating better than ever, with positive feedback from all camps. With Xtend, Tutor and Community Talks being shared we should still see each other enough to  remember and enjoy the benefits of the gigantic Footscray of old.

We have been SAILing in Braybrook for two weeks and it is going very well!  Although Saturday mornings are slightly chilly, many SAILors are reporting that they enjoy their new SAIL Saturday School.  Our library, with a few new additions, is still in the process of being set up, and is all set to become once more, the heart of SAIL operations!

If anyone is having trouble getting to the new campuses and would like a lift from Footscray Station, feel free to send us an email and we will line it up.

SAIL Xtend update

This cycle saw the unleashing of SAIL Xtend short courses for SAILors.  The activities have been taking place from 12:30- 1:30 at SAIL Braybrook each Saturday.

SAILors have been cooking up a storm with Michelle, Jaya, Achol and Aduk, producing some amazingly tasty cookies and corn fritters.  We have seen some fantastic drama performances from our Drama Xtend group, with the help of Will, Sarah and Ezeldin.  AFL recruiters have been on the prowl, with the kicking off of football under the guidance of Brendan, Dave and Libby.

Thank you to all those SAILors from SAIL Footscray who drive their students over after lunch.  If there is anyone else who is willing and able to drop a carload of young SAILors over to SAIL Braybrook each week for activities, please let us know!  Also, if you think your student/s would be interested in participating in an Xtend activity, or you are interested in being involved, please let Cait, Cam or Will know.

Calling for Contributions to the SAIL Star!

Once again, we are still on the look out for more SAIL Star contributions from the Sudanese SAILors.  Contributions can be anything from SAIL Star worksheets, to word-finds or crosswords SAILors have made, to reports about their new SAIL Saturday School.  Please pop any contributions into the SAIL Star box in the library.

Welcome aboard Lisa!

We would like to welcome to Lisa as a Saturday Coordinator at the Community Centre. In a couple of months Lisa will be opening a new SAIL campus in St Albans. In the meantime she will be helping out Cam. Lisa enjoys nothing more than meeting new people so be sure to say hello!

Arriving on Time

With cold winter weather setting in, the degree of difficulty in getting out of bed on a Saturday morning can be likened to that of an aerial skiing quadruple backflip. However, we would encourage all tutors to set a hideously loud alarm on the other side of their bedrooms so that we can all kick off at 10:30 sharp. The later we are, the later the people we pick up will be, and the less learning time there is for everyone involved. We really appreciate everyone making a big effort to arrive before 10.30 so that the students are ready to go at 10.30.

A Big Thank You to the Cleaning Crew

We would like to extend a big thank you to everyone who spares 10 minutes after lunch to help out with the cleaning and packing up! Given the size of the campuses we have decided not to implement a formal cleaning roster just yet. Instead we’re hoping that we can all work as a team to pack away chairs and tables, sweep the floors and pick up rubbish outside. So after lunch feel free to grab a broom and go nuts!

And Another Big Thank you to our Kitchen Team

As if our Kitchen Team wasn’t wonderful enough, they have over the last few weeks become even more special! Each week the food is prepared at the Footscray kitchen (which is conveniently large enough to feed the Chinese army) and then half the rolls are carted over to Darnley St. The Team then meets again back at Footscray campus to clean the mansion-like kitchen. Go Kitchen Team!!!

Security at SAIL

Please be sure to err on the side of caution and secure all valuables while at SAIL. With so many people coming and going from the venues each Saturday, we are unfortunately unable to take responsibility for lost items. While instances of theft at SAIL are extremely rare, we recommend that all valuables be left at home or locked in cars.

Upcoming Week 5 Talks!

To celebrate our move to SAIL Braybrook and Maidstone campuses, there will be a huge line up of sensational guest speakers for our upcoming week 5talks!

For SAIL Junior volunteers there will be a talk about environments to support English as a second language run by Ann-Maree from the Free Kindergarten Association.

For SAIL Primary we have Tim Burch, a regular speaker at SAIL who will supply volunteers with tips on how to be a super tutor and provide some specific games you can use at SAIL.

For SAIL Senior, Mary Green from AMES will hold a workshop for tutors on how to use money and budgeting as an ESL teaching topic. It covers how to teach numeracy, as well as teaching the language relating to the topic, and includes resources/worksheets/activities to use for teaching this topic.

Finally, the community talk will be about police powers and emergency services, presented by Springvale Monash Legal Service.

All talks will start immediately after lunch at the usual time of 12:30pm and finish at 1:30pm with the exception of SAIL Senior talks, which is scheduled to run for an extra half hour.

Please remember that all week 5 talks will be held at the Braybrook Campus.

For tutors at the Maidstone campus, the Braybrook campus is at 67 Darnley Street, Braybrook (Mel ref 27 B12) - a five-minute drive from the Maidstone campus. Any cars with spare seats to accommodate tutors attending the talks will be much appreciated!

SAILAway to the Footy  - Western Bulldogs vs Kangaroos

Sunday 9 July | Melbourne Cricket Grounds

SAIL has got its hands on tickets to another footy game – this time, the Doggies vs the Roos. Email Matthew at sail@africanoz.com to reserve your tickets. Tutors and SAILors will be meeting at 12:30pm at the MCG prior to the game. And again, the only catch is that tutors wishing to bring their students will be asked to organise transport for the SAILors they propose to bring.

New SAIL Tutor Resource: “Land that Job In Australia – Successful Job-hunting for Migrants”

Published by Tribus Lingua, this is a must-read for any SAILor looking for a job or for tutors looking for a bit more background on the migrant experience in Australia. FReeZACentral music industry workshops

For those with musically inclined SAILor buddies, please note the new initiative called FReeZACentral. This is a government-sponsored organization that aims to help talented young people break into the music industry, is organizing nine workshops all around Victoria for 15-25 year olds interested in a career in music.  These all-day workshops will provide information on planning careers in the music business, plus the unique opportunity to meet industry pros and learn first hand about their day-to-day jobs.

Of the 500 participants expected to attend the workshops, 50 young people aged 18 to 25 will be selected to join the FReeZACentral Mentoring Program. All mentorees will receive one-on-one career guidance from industry professionals in their chosen field of event management, marketing and promotion, technical, performance and music business operations. Mentorees will also gain hands-on industry experience by helping to organise and run a statewide tour and recording project.

Total trivia

Did you know that Sudan has the largest camel population in the world? Our SAIL trivia team didn’t know that either, which lost us key points in our aim to win the SAILAway Trivia Night!  A number of SAILors were part of a magnificent SAIL Trivia Team, and participated in the SAILAway Trivia Night that aimed to raise funds for a camp scheduled in October that will involve up to 40 Sudanese SAILors.  It was a fantastic night, and it was great to see so many people coming together.  Look out for more updates about this upcoming camp!

Thank you for your donation of time and energy each week. We look forward to seeing the benefits of it as SAIL 06 continues!
