Happy Birthday to SAIL Altona!

Thanks to all that took part in our one-year birthday celebrations
last Saturday. It is a great milestone to reach. We once started with 20 students
and 15 volunteers and
now, there are plenty of new faces about and we have
50 wonderful students and 40 superb tutors! Please welcome any new
students or tutors floating about, a friendly face is always a great
way to start SAIL. A special thanks to Marg Donald who organised the
banner and the biggest cake we have ever seen! Thanks to Ros who made
those delightfully cute pink cupcakes.

Week Five Talks

Our next tutor and community talks will take place after class on Saturday the 1st of July.

For the tutors, Maria Foster from Victorian Legal Aid (VLA) will be coming. Maria will talk about legal issues affecting young people and how you can best prepare them for simple things like dealing with police and obeying road rules and more dramatic one like domestic violence and abuse. Maria will also present the new booklet 'Kit to Educate Young People about Legal Issues' and a copy will be offered to each tutor who may then use this resource with their students. This resource has worksheets and activities that we encourage you to go through with the SAILor buddies. Please pencil this talk in your diaries.

The community talk will be about police powers and emergency services, presented by Springvale Monash Legal Service.

Magazines Wanted

Calling all avid magazine readers - if anyone has any old and unwanted magazines lying around at home, they would make a brilliant addition to our Library. Please give them to Wayn or Catherine.

Car Seats

Do you have an old toddler’s car seat getting dusty in your shed? If so, we know of some little SAILors who could make very good use of it.  Due to the fact that most of our families rely on public transport during the week, when they come to SAIL on Saturdays, they don’t have car seats for their little ones.  If you either have or know of somebody who has a car seat that can be donated or lent to a Sudanese family in order to get some little SAILors to SAIL more safely, please let Wayn or Catherine know.

Temptation Tickets

SAIL Altona has been given 1o tickets to see the game show -Temptation - being filmed on the 19th of September. This will take place after SAIL at 1.30pm in Channel 9’s Richmond studio.  If you’re a fan of the show, or just want to get out and about and spend some time with your SAILor buddy, this is a perfect opportunity. Please see Wayn and Catherine and they will put some tickets aside for you.

SAIL has got its hands on tickets to another footy game – this time, the Doggies vs the Roos. Email Matthew at sail@africanoz.com to reserve your tickets. Tutors and SAILors will be meeting at 12:30pm at the MCG prior to the game. And again, the only catch is that tutors wishing to bring their students will be asked to organise transport for the SAILors they propose to bring.

FReeZACentral music industry workshops

For those with musically inclined SAILor buddies, please note the new initiative called FReeZACentral. This is a government-sponsored organization that aims to help talented young people break into the music industry, is organizing nine workshops all around Victoria for 15-25 year olds interested in a career in music. These all-day workshops will provide information on planning careers in the music business, plus the unique opportunity to meet industry pros and learn first hand about their day-to-day jobs.

Of the 500 participants expected to attend the workshops, 50 young people aged 18 to 25 will be selected to join the FReeZACentral Mentoring Program. All mentorees will receive one-on-one career guidance from industry professionals in their chosen field of event management, marketing and promotion, technical, performance and music business operations. Mentorees will also gain hands-on industry experience by helping to organise and run a statewide tour and recording project.

Registration is free and includes a free lunch. Register online at http://www.freezacentral.vic.gov.au or contact The Push on 03-9380 1277.

Total trivia

Did you know that Sudan has the largest camel population in the world? Our SAIL trivia team didn’t know that either, which lost us key points in our aim to win the SAILAway Trivia Night!  A number of SAILors were part of a magnificent SAIL Trivia Team, and participated in the SAILAway Trivia Night that aimed to raise funds for a camp scheduled in October that will involve up to 40 Sudanese SAILors.

Thank you for your time and energy donations each week. We look forward to seeing the benefits of it as the year continues!
