SAIL turns 5!!!

The big day is coming! On 26 August, please set aside the day until the early afternoon to join us for the biggest SAIL celebration ever. Approximately 500 SAILors will be converging on a central venue from all four campuses to celebrate 5 years of SAILing!!! Details are to come.

Please also mark 2 September aside in your diary. This night will play host to the first ever SAIL formal, for secondary SAILors, SAILors Senior and tutors. We hope you will join us for this big night of nights also. More details to come on this one too!

A Red Hot Visit to SAIL!

In the coming month of September, SAIL will see the beginning of a series of visits by the Fire Brigade. The Brigade will kick off with presentation, followed by the arrival of a real-life fire truck (and no, it won’t just be Cam’s car painted red). All SAILors will receive printed information about fire safety, which will be useful discussion material in subsequent tutoring sessions. Watch out for more updates on these visits soon!

More SAILAbout Activities

“Yallah Hayat”

October 27 and 28| 7:30pm | Broadmeadows Town Hall

“Yallah Hayat” is a performance by a hundred young and talented artists from the Anti-Racism Action Band (A.R.A.B.). Combining hip-hop, belly dance, song and spoken narrative, the performers ask themselves and their audiences the question “What is Race?”

Tutors, this is a great opportunity for music-loving young SAILors, so let us know if you and/or your student are interested. Bookings need to be made ASAP!

Soccer During Tutoring Time

In the aftermath of Australia’s inspiring efforts at the World Cup, interest in playing soccer has been spilling over into tutoring time. While soccer is a great incentive to encourage students to work, we ask that soccer balls remain in cars until 12pm.

SAIL Xtend Wrap Up

Another cycle of SAIL Xtend has been in full swing and highlights included an all-girl dance group that proved to be very popular among the older girls. SAILors have also been cooking up a storm, making pasta, cookies and cakes in the kitchen. We are always in need of extra hands during Xtend, so please let us know if you’re interested in getting involved.

VCE Excursions

VCE Excursions to university and TAFE open days will begin this Sunday. We will be taking SAILors in Years 11 and 12 to the University of Melbourne, RMIT and Footscray City College. Trips to other universities will follow in the coming weeks. If your student is in VCE, please speak to them about coming along. Alternatively, if you’re interested in joining the tour and helping transport students, please let us know.

Computer Training

Recently, SAIL formed a partnership with Engineers Without Borders to design a 24-week computer course for 10 SAILors. This is a fantastic opportunity for job-hunting SAILors and as there are a couple of places left, please let us know if you student may be interested.

The banquet program includes informational and inspirational speakers, African drumming performances, a light-hearted auction and of course, a wide range of Sudanese delicacies. And after the banquet, you can settle down and watch the screening of All About Darfur (2005), a documentary created by Sudanese-British director Taghreed Elsanhouri.

Tickets are $65, please RSVP by 16th August. So come along for a cup of famous Sudanese “Guhwah” coffee, some Salata Aswad (for those who didn’t know, this is a killer eggplant, peanut butter and garlic dip) and meet other individuals who want to make a difference!

Total trivia

A SAIL tutor recently attended a parent/teacher interview concerning their SAILor buddy. During the interview the SAIL tutor asked the teacher what the SAILor needed to prepare for the next semester. He recommended that she pre-read the book assigned for that semester. On seeing the book, the tutor knew her SAILor buddy was in line for an A+. The assigned book is the autobiography of the tutor’s father, a book in which she is a character! Ain’t SAIL networks grand!

Thank you for your time and energy donation each week. We look forward to seeing the benefits of it as the year continues!
