Welcome to SAIL Altona’s first newsletter for 2008!

SAIL Altona is experiencing exciting times this year as there has been unprecedented growth in the number of volunteers wanting to participate in the SAIL program. Thanks to this fact as well as the growing number of available drivers to do SAIL family pick-ups each week, we’ve been able to take families off the wait list and they’ve been able to attend SAIL for the first time. Last week, we had one new family and in the coming week, we anticipate at least two more families will be able to join the crew.

Upcoming Community talks

On Saturday, 19th April, there will be two community talks scheduled at the same time, relevant to different age groups within the SAIL program. Katie Fraser will be coming to discuss issues of common consumer law with participating members of our SAIL senior program. Tutors are more than welcome to join senior SAILors in attending these talks. The talks will cover important issues such as how to manage door-to-door marketers, getting a loan and managing utility bills.

The second talk will be aimed at the youths of SAIL, 15 years and older. This session will be conducted by the Anti Racism Action Band (A.R.A.B), a inspirational group of young hip-hop performers who send their messages about sexual health and safety to Australian youth through break-dancing, beat-boxing and rapping performances.

SAIL Away to Camp Somers!

Our annual camp extravaganza; SAILAway, is fast approaching. Scheduled to take place from 25th-27th April at Camp Somers on the Mornington Peninsula, SAILors 13 years and older will have a chance to take part in what is arguably the most exciting event on the SAIL calendar. Simply let Dane know if you’d like to attend, and he’ll arrange forms as well as provide you with any important information. Be sure to get in quick – this is the best way to get to know fellow SAILors and the rest of the WholeSAIL community and we guarantee that you’ll be talking, writing and gossiping about it for months afterwards!

Housekeeping Thanks

A huge thankyou goes out to all tutors and students that help set up, pack up and clean up the SAIL campus each week. Your efforts are a huge help to coordinators and are much appreciated. A reminder that no pens or markers are to be used in the main body of the church, and similarly, no food is allowed into these premises either.

Transport
Thank you to Patience for coming on board as the new Altona Transport Coordinator. Patience and Dane will be roaming around in the coming weeks and talking to all current and potential drivers of SAIL families. If you drive to SAIL and would be willing to pick up a family, please don’t hesitate to talk to Patience or Dane.

Library

SAIL Altona is on the look out for a librarian! If anyone is interested in this position, please approach Dane for more information on Saturday.
