SAIL Tutor Talks

Our next SAIL Tutor Talk for 2008 is coming up on Wednesday 23rd of July between 6:30-8:00pm and you’re invited!

SAIL Tutor Talks are a brilliant opportunity to get some insight into volunteering from a range of professionals with extensive experience at SAIL and they also provide ongoing training for SAIL tutors.

Tutor Talks give you the chance to discuss how you interact with your student and enable you to compare your experience with those of other tutors. The presentations are useful for both experienced SAIL volunteers as well as those who are just starting out. Best of all, dinner will be provided between the two 30-minute presentations.

Each Tutor Talk will be held at the Holy Trinity Anglican Church, 193 Hotham Street (cnr Clarendon St), East Melbourne, between 6:00- 8:00pm one Wednesday per month.

The dates for the rest of the year are as follows:

- Wednesday 27 August
- Wednesday 1 October
- Wednesday 5 November

Welcome aboard Jasmine
We are very pleased to welcome Jasmine Morrissey on board the good ship SAIL Altona to join Dane as Campus Coordinator. Over recent weeks Jasmine has been getting around to introduce herself, but if you are yet to meet her, please seek her out at SAIL this Saturday.

SAIL Formal Saturday September 6, 2008

Altona SAILors Johnson, David, Akol, Jacob, David and Jock are busy organising the most exciting event of the SAIL year. Scheduled for 6th September, we would like to invite SAIL students aged 13 years and over and tutors from all SAIL campuses to attend.

Please keep September 6th free in your diary and start planning your outfit for the night.

If you’d like to lend a hand or have any smashing ideas to contribute (on theme, venue, etc), please let the Formal Committee know or simply have a chat to Jasmine or Dane on Saturday.

Keeping the Library in tip top shape

The SAIL Library is now spick and span as well as completely reorganised from top to bottom. Be sure to check out the brand new Community section, featuring helpful information about domestic and legal issues faced by Sudanese families.

There are also plenty of brochures from organisations whose services are available to all SAILors. Please ensure to keep the library in its current spotless condition.

Hobson’s Bay Library: VCE Students Only

A reminder that access to Hobson’s Bay Library during SAIL time is for students in VCE only. We ask you to make a special effort to ensure students in other year levels work onsite at SAIL.

Pre-loved Baby Seats Wanted

SAIL Altona is on the lookout for second-hand baby seats! If you have one that you are willing to donate or you know of somewhere we can get some, please let Jasmine or Dane know on Saturday.

Drivers Required

As always, we are on the lookout for anyone with a car that would be willing to pick-up and drop off a family each week. We have a waiting list of families that would love to attend SAIL every Saturday but who have no means of transport. If you are interested in being a SAIL Driver, please let Jasmine or Dane know.

Housekeeping Thanks

A huge thank you goes out to all tutors and students that help set up, pack up and clean up the SAIL campus each week. Your efforts are a huge help to our coordinators and are much appreciated.

A reminder that no pens or markers are to be used in the main body of the church, and similarly, no food is allowed into these premises either.

WholeSAIL News

The Refugee Experience In Film

In recent years, a number of fantastic films have been made documenting the lives of refugees and the Refugee Health Research Centre’s Good Starts Arts project is showcasing two shining examples: See Through Me, a film on discrimination seen through the eyes of ten young Somali-Australians and Crazy, a documentary on the everyday experiences of six young Sudanese-Australian women. Exploring the settlement experiences of youths from refugee backgrounds in different ways, these two films are at once challenging, fascinating and engaging. They are both available to watch on the RHRC website: www.latrobe.edu.au/rhrc/.
