SAIL Tutor Talks
Our next SAIL Tutor Talk for 2008 is coming up on Wednesday 27th of August between 6:30-8:00pm and you’re invited!
SAIL Tutor Talks are a brilliant opportunity to get some insight into volunteering from a range of professionals with extensive experience at SAIL and they also provide ongoing training for SAIL tutors.
Tutor Talks give you the chance to discuss how you interact with your student and enable you to compare your experience with those of other tutors. The presentations are useful for both experienced SAIL volunteers as well as those who are just starting out. Best of all, dinner will be provided between the two 30-minute presentations.
SAILAway to Camp Netzer

Thanks to the generosity of Netzer, eight of our secondary SAILors attended Netzer’s Cinemateque camp in the Alpine Valley of Northern Victoria. The camp saw SAILors participating in Israeli dancing, martial arts demonstrations, drama activities and relaxation workshops. Following the set program, there was a lot of singing and dancing into the wee hours of the morning!

A big thanks to Netzer for making everyone from SAIL welcome and providing our SAILors with this unique opportunity. In addition, thank you to the SAILors who braved the long car ride and cold weather to participate.

SAILAbout to Chinatown
Some younger SAILors made a long train trip into Chinatown to enjoy an authentic Chinese meal at the Spicy Fish restaurant. SAILors showed no fear when faced with a multitude of traditional dishes including duck, pork, squid, dumplings and spring rolls. Everybody got right into the spirit and weren’t even daunted by the spiciness of the Sichuan dishes on offer. SAILors also showed their tremendous dexterity with most finishing their meal entirely with chopsticks. A big thanks to SAIL Robinson’s resident chef, Chris, who organised the sojourn.

Drama Xtend
SAILors have been hamming it up for Drama and Theatre-sports in this cycle of Xtend activities. In the weeks past, SAILors have shed their secret identities to save cities from super-villains and have brought out their inner marketing talents to sell prune-juice amongst many other drama and theatre-sport activities. Thanks to SAIL Langhorne’s Jess and Lyndal for running the activities.
Our next Xtend Cycle will see SAILors participating in sporting activities to coincide with the Olympic Games in Beijing.
Our Xtend program runs each Saturday after lunch at SAIL for approximately one hour. If you would like to get involved in the Xtend program, please ask Aidan or Hannah on Saturday (or via email).

This Month’s Theme
Our current theme is ‘Health’ and we’ve had a variety of health-related worksheets covering topics such as healthy eating, illness and the human body. We also had a box of food packaging with an accompanying worksheet and we hope SAILors were able to improve their ability to read labels and nutritional information on food products.

Thank you to all the SAILors who have been getting involved with the theme, which wraps up on 26th July. Following this, ‘Health’ will make way for our new theme – ‘The Olympic Games’ – which kicks off on 2nd of August.

Setting SAIL on time
We’d like to thank everybody for arriving early and helping set up. This is a gigantic help as it means our ship is ready to sail at 11:00am sharp. Just a reminder that we would like to start at this time every week so if everybody could do their best to arrive at 10:50am, that would be great. If you or your SAILor are having difficulty arriving on time, please speak to Aidan or Hannah, who will do their best to assist you.
The development of each and every SAILor is of utmost concern to us and as we only have 90 minutes each week, we should aim to make the most of it – our SAILors need every second they can get!
WholeSAIL News
The Refugee Experience In Film
In recent years, a number of fantastic films have been made documenting the lives of refugees and the Refugee Health Research Centre’s Good Starts Arts project is showcasing two shining examples: See Through Me, a film on discrimination seen through the eyes of ten young Somali-Australians and Crazy, a documentary on the everyday experiences of six young Sudanese-Australian women. Exploring the settlement experiences of youths from refugee backgrounds in different ways, these two films are at once challenging, fascinating and engaging. They are both available to watch on the RHRC website: www.latrobe.edu.au/rhrc/.

Total Trivia
Sudan is the largest country on the African continent with a total area of 2,505,800 sq km. Now that’s big!

Smooth SAILing,
Aidan, Hannah, Nik and Cara.
