SAIL Tutor Talks
Our next SAIL Tutor Talk for 2008 is coming up on Wednesday 27th of August between 6:30-8:00pm and you’re invited!
SAIL Tutor Talks are a brilliant opportunity to get some insight into volunteering from a range of professionals with extensive experience at SAIL and they also provide ongoing training for SAIL tutors.
Tutor Talks give you the chance to discuss how you interact with your student and enable you to compare your experience with those of other tutors. The presentations are useful for both experienced SAIL volunteers as well as those who are just starting out. Best of all, dinner will be provided between the two 30-minute presentations.
Each Tutor Talk will be held at the Holy Trinity Anglican Church, 193 Hotham Street (cnr Clarendon St), East Melbourne, between 6:00- 8:00pm one Wednesday per month.
The dates for the rest of the year are as follows:
- Wednesday 1 October
- Wednesday 5 November

Tutor Drinks

In response to a high demand for more social SAIL events, we present to you - Tutor Drinks! Our very first drinks comes up on Saturday, 11th October, and will be a great chance for over-age SAILors to catch up and share stories, as well as to meet tutors from our other campuses around Melbourne. So come on down to the Prince Alfred Hotel, 619 Church Street, Richmond at 7.00pm, Saturday, 11th October.

SAIL Formal in September

The SAIL Formal is once again being planned by SAILors at Altona and students Johnson, David, Akol, Jacob and tutors David and Jock are busy organising the event. Scheduled for 6th September, this event welcomes tutors and students from every Melbourne campus so long as they are above 13 years of age. If you are interested in helping with organization, or you have ideas on theme, venue, etc, please let the formal committee know or speak to Jasmine or Dane on Saturday.

Hobsons Bay Library

From now on, we’re back to enforcing the rule that only VCE Students are allowed to visit the Hobsons Bay Library. This rule is in place to keep the campus from spreading too thinly, and to ensure our presence in the library is carefully regulated so please refrain from letting your student wander off to the Hobsons Bay Library and try to use the resources we have available on campus to structure your SAIL time. Please note that we can make exceptions and if you think your case is particularly special, please speak to Dane or Jasmine.

Seeking Baby Seats

SAIL Altona is on the look-out for second-hand baby seats! If you have one that you are willing to donate or you know of somewhere we can get one, please let Jasmine or Dane know on Saturday.

Drivers Wanted

As always, we are on the look-out for anyone with a car that would be willing to pick-up and drop off a family each week. We have a waiting list of families that would love to attend SAIL each week but have no transport to and from campus. If you are interested in being a SAIL Driver, please let Jasmine or Dane know.

Housekeeping: A Huge Thank You

A great big Thank You goes out to all tutors and students that help set up, pack up and clean up the SAIL campus each week. Your efforts are a huge help to our coordinators and are much appreciated. A reminder that no pens or markers are to be used in the main body of the church, and similarly, no food is allowed into these premises either.

WholeSAIL News
The Refugee Experience In Film
In recent years, a number of fantastic films have been made documenting the lives of refugees and the Refugee Health Research Centre’s Good Starts Arts project is showcasing two shining examples: See Through Me, a film on discrimination seen through the eyes of ten young Somali-Australians and Crazy, a documentary on the everyday experiences of six young Sudanese-Australian women. Exploring the settlement experiences of youths from refugee backgrounds in different ways, these two films are at once challenging, fascinating and engaging. They are both available to watch on the RHRC website: www.latrobe.edu.au/rhrc/.
Total Trivia
Sudan is the largest country on the African continent with a total area of 2,505,800 sq km. Now that’s big!

Smooth Sailing,

Dane, Jasmine, Nik & Cara.
