The first ever SAIL Sydney Tutor Drinks will be happening this Thursday at the Clarendon Hotel in the City at 6:30pm. It’s on the corner of Waterloo and Devonshire just near Central Station in Surry Hills. It would be great to see you all there and to catch up without the bustle of tutoring. On 23rd August, we will be having a party for SAIL’s 7th birthday! There will be cake and goodies to round off tutoring, and we also hope to set up a video link with the hundreds of our SAIL friends in Melbourne, so if anyone would like to do a performance which will be broadcast for all of Melbourne to see on the day, just let us know! Week 5 tutor talks for 2008 occur on 13th September, 18th October and 22nd November. Week 5 Tutor Talks
Tutor Talks will commence on 13th September. These talks are provided to enrich the experience of tutors and will cover a whole range of SAIL-related topics. They are held at the Seven Hills Community Centre and will start immediately after lunch and run for about 45 minutes. If you’d like to see particular topics covered, or if you have contacts who might like to be guest speakers, feel free to let us know at SAILSevenhills@africanoz.com. Previous talks have been conducted by ESL expert Lyndall Thurley and SAIL overseeing coordinators from Melbourne, Nik Tan and Cara Morrissy. SAIL Xtend
After a brilliant beginning with Manjula and Kate’s painting workshops, we are looking to set up another SAIL Xtend workshop. Some of the Xtend activities we’d like to see include hip hop, dancing, cooking, sports and crafts. If you would like to volunteer to run an Xtend workshop or you know someone who would like to volunteer, please don’t be shy. Let us know. The kids love Xtend! Call for SAIL Star contributions! Thanks to all the students who contributed to the last edition of the SAIL star newspaper! SAIL Seven Hills was brilliantly represented with fantastic pieces by David, Bol and Marline. The SAIL Star is a student newsletter aimed to encourage SAILors to produce written and visual work about themselves and their lives. It is published in an irregular mock-newspaper format and is distributed at SAIL. The submission box is in the library, and any work that your student/s produce can go into it – stories, reviews, drawings, jokes, whatever! We will publish it as soon as there is space. Tutors, this can be a great way to motivate your students and give them a big boost in confidence! SAIL Penpals A couple of years ago, SAIL Penpals began as a way to open up communication between students across all SAIL campuses. Due to popular demand, it has continued! If your student is not yet involved and you think they would enjoy it, let us know. As it has become very popular and word has spread, there are a number of SAILors who are waiting to find their very own penpal. Chat with Sophie or Ian to get your student involved. Set up at SAIL There have been a lot of tutors arriving early at the centre on Saturdays, which is fantastic. Arriving early gives you the opportunity to visit the library when it is a little quieter and flip through the worksheet folders in preparation for your lesson. Also, half and hour in the lead up to tutoring time, we’re usually setting up the hall. This involves moving tables and chairs into the hall and moving toys from the library to the Junior Room. If you arrive early, please don’t be shy to help us out, any extra hands in the morning makes the task that much easier! Packing up at SAIL A special thank-you to all the SAILors who have been staying behind to help with the clean up at the end of tutoring time. It makes a huge difference to us and is greatly appreciated! SAIL Food All our food is generously donated by fantastic cafes through an organisation called OzHarvest. This means it is a bit of a lucky dip as to what we get, but we have been really lucky with some great food and tasty treats. If you have any special dietary requirements, or if you have experienced any problems with the food, please let Ian or Sophie know. Kitchen Rules Our SAIL microwave has become quite a popular feature for the students. It’s fine for everyone to use it to heat up their lunch, however please keep in mind that it can get a bit crowded and crazy in our small kitchen if too many people are in there at once (especially kids!), so please make sure you take turns using it and don’t create too large a crowd. Rubbish rules During lunch, some of our SAILors tend to get a little excited so there are a few general rules that we would like all tutors to put into effect. These include no running in the hall, no eating in the hall and no littering. These are pretty common sense rules and if you see anyone not following these rules please remind them. We are also trying to be as environmentally friendly as possible at SAIL Seven Hills, and would love to get the plastic plates and cups back to reuse or recycle, so if you could keep them out on the tables or bring them to the kitchen after you’ve used them, that would be brilliant. Total Trivia How many medals did Australia win at the Athens Olympics, and what position in the medal table did they come? The answer is below…. Thank you all for the time and energy you donate each week. We are thrilled with the rapid progress of SAIL Seven Hills in 2008 and we look forward to the rest of the year! Ian, Sophie, Cara and Nik.
