Week 5 Tutor Talks
Our final tutor talk for 2008 takes place on 5th November. SAIL Tutor Talks are a brilliant opportunity to get some insight into volunteering from a range of professionals with extensive experience at SAIL and they also provide ongoing training for SAIL tutors.

Tutor Talks also give you the chance to discuss how you interact with your student and enable you to compare your experience with those of other tutors. The presentations are useful for both experienced SAIL volunteers as well as those who are just starting out. Best of all, dinner is provided between the two 30-minute presentations.

Our final tutor talk will be held at the Holy Trinity Anglican Church, 193 Hotham Street (cnr Clarendon St), East Melbourne, from 6:00- 8:00pm.

Xtend Update
In August, our SAIL Xtenders travelled to Maidstone for AFL workshops run in association with the Western Bulldogs. Students underwent rigorous training sessions with many rising stars in the making. The next Xtend cycle starts on 4 October, and we invite any tutors interested to join in Xtend. It is a lot of fun and a great way to meet students and tutors.

Community Talks and Seniors
Our next Community Talk is on 27 September. It will be given by Natalie from the Western Region Health Centre on ‘Health, Food and Fitness.’ This talk will be held in the house from 11:15-12:00pm. In an effort to drum up interest in Community Talks and the Senior Program generally, we are calling on drivers to encourage parents of students to come along to SAIL, where they are always welcome.

Also secondary tutors, please inform your student of this date and if you are interested in attending, please feel free to come along!

Library News
We ask that tutors take particular care in ensuring that games and worksheets your SAILors use are put away at the end of each session and we’d like to thank all the tutors who have made the effort to tidy up the area after tutoring.

SAIL Worksheets & Activities
Short on tutoring ideas? Braybrook is lucky to have a large range of worksheets and activities on offer. If you ever feel like you are running low on ideas or activities, please let a coordinator know and we can point you in the direction of our huge collection of resources. New in our library this month is a series of educational laminated cards in the library, a kit on using The Age newspaper and a CD jam-packed with SAIL worksheets and ideas, available for loan to tutors. If you are interested, please see a coordinator.

Calling for more SAIL Star Submissions!
It’s that time of the month, and once again, we are on the lookout for more submissions to the SAIL Star, the Student Newsletter at SAIL. If the SAILor you work with has written a story, drawn a picture or created something else fantastic during SAIL, please suggest they put their masterpiece in the SAIL Star Box to be published.

Punctuality at SAIL
You may have noticed that the SAIL starting time at Braybrook seems to be dragging out to more like 11:00am that 10:30am. In order to maximise tutoring time, please do everything you can to arrive at SAIL by 10:20am to start tutoring at 10:30am sharp.

If you are having difficulties with getting yourself and the SAILors you pick up there on time, please come and speak with us. If you’ve noticed that your student is often late, feel free to bring that up with us also!

Cleaning Thank You
A huge thank you to all tutors who have for stayed back to assist with cleaning SAIL on Saturday. We sincerely appreciate you adding the extra time to your day at SAIL. It allows us to leave hours earlier in the comfort of knowing that the venue is in as good a shape (and often better) as it was at the start of the day!

WholeSAIL News
SAIL’s 7th Birthday Party Celebration

On Saturday 23rd of August more than 600 SAILors from all six Melbourne campuses came together to celebrate Seven Years of SAIL. The party took place at Maribyrnong College and featured performers from SAILs Dandenong, Footscray and Braybrook, as well as a short film of the SAIL News. A presentation was also made to SAIL’s founder and past overseeing coordinator, Matthew Albert. Finally a delicious chocolate birthday cake in the shape of a Seven kicked off the Birthday lunch; an assortment of healthy salad rolls, delicious pies and cakes of all shapes and sizes. Thank you to you all for celebrating SAIL’s 7th Birthday in style!

The SAIL Summit
On Saturday, 4 October, there will be a round table summit to discuss two key questions: What SAIL does now and how SAIL can better support the Sudanese community. Two student representatives and a coordinator from each campus will attend the summit. If you would like to have any input in the questions up for discussion and/or are interested in the outcome of the summit, please chat to your campus coordinator or contact Nik and Cara at
sail@africanoz.com

SAIL Tutor Drinks
Want to get to know other SAIL tutors outside Saturday mornings? The chance is fast approaching! On Saturday, 11 October at 7:00pm, our annual SAIL tutor drinks are being held for tutors from all campuses, at the Prince Alfred Hotel, 619 Church St, Richmond.

The evening is an opportunity to meet tutors from your own campuses and from SAIL’s many others, compare tutoring experiences and increase the sense of community within SAIL each Saturday. We would greatly appreciate an RSVP if you plan to attend. Please do this by speaking to your coordinators this Saturday or via email.

SAIL Tutor Survey
In recent weeks, the yearly SAIL tutor survey will have made its way into your inbox. Thank you to those who have already responded with their valuable thoughts, ideas and feedback on all things SAIL. We ask that you take time to complete it to ensure the good ship SAIL stays on the right course.

SAIL Total Trivia
Did you know?
The Sudanese flag is a red, white and black tricolour with a green triangle next to the hoist. Red represents the struggle of martyrs who gave their lives for their country, white stands for peace, optimism and love, black symbolises Sudan and the Mahdiya revolution, while green is for Islam, prosperity and agriculture.

Thank you for SAILing into Spring!
Gemma, Sam, Ashanti, Nik and Cara.
