A Warm Welcome and a Big Thank You to all SAILors!

We’d like to extend a very warm welcome to all the new faces that have joined us recently, and of course thanks to our current volunteers for their ongoing commitment. SAIL Glengala is growing rapidly and we look forward to exciting times ahead.

SAIL Xtend Cooking

Over the past few months after their tutoring session, some of our secondary girls have cooked up a storm in the kitchen! So far we’ve seen fantastic pasta, a roast, pizza and triangle pies that would have most cooks quaking in their aprons. Thanks to Anne, Pam and Natasha for extending their culinary expertise to the girls.

More Xtend Programs Wanted

We are looking to establish more Xtend programs that will run after lunch from various areas from arts and craft, to music, sport, and everything in between. If you would like to get involved in a SAIL Xtend program, or are interesting in starting an Xtend program, please let us know on Saturday.

Christmas Preparations

On 20 December, we set sail for the last time in 2008 and we’d like to celebrate the occasion with some Christmas festivities.  Among other events on the day, we are hoping to have performances from our very own students, so if you are interested in putting something together with your SAILors, we would love to hear your ideas!

We are also on the lookout for presents for the students, so if you or anyone you know is able to donate any books, CDs, toys or anything else for Christmas, please do let us know.

Setting SAIL On Time

Thanks to everyone for arriving on time and helping to setup for the day. This is a huge help as it means we are able to start SAILing at 11am. Please be reminded that you should arrive by 10:50am to commence tutoring at 11am sharp.

If you are having difficulty arriving at 10:50am, or the SAILors you pick up are taking a long time to get ready, please let Kathryn or Simon know and we will do our best to assist.

Housekeeping Matters

We’d like to extend a thank you to everyone for helping to clean up after tutoring time. Just a reminder to please ensure that all games and books that are borrowed from the library are returned to their respective places. It helps to keep things together, and sets a great example for the younger SAILors.

Thanks also for filling out the ‘can’t come’ form for the weeks you are unable to attend SAIL. It’s a big help with keeping things organised and consistent on Saturdays.

SAIL 7th Birthday Celebrations
On Saturday, 23 August more than 600 SAILors from all six Melbourne campuses came together to celebrate Seven Years of SAIL. The party took place at Maribyrnong College and featured performers from SAIL Dandenong, Footscray and Braybrook, as well as a short film on SAIL News. A presentation was also made to SAIL’s founder and past overseeing coordinator, Matthew Albert. Finally, a delicious chocolate birthday cake in the shape of the number seven kicked off the Birthday Lunch, an assortment of healthy salad rolls, delicious pies and cakes of all shapes and sizes. Thank you to you all for joining in the celebrations.

SAIL Tutor Survey
In recent weeks, the yearly SAIL tutor survey will have made its way into your inbox. Thank you to those who have already responded with their valuable thoughts, ideas, feedback on all things SAIL. We ask that you take the time to complete it to ensure the good ship SAIL stays on the right course.

Total Trivia

Did you know? The Sudanese flag is a red, white and black tricolour with a green triangle next to the hoist. Red represents the struggle of martyrs who gave their lives for their country, white stands for peace, optimism and love, black symbolises Sudan and the Mahdiya revolution, while green is for Islam, prosperity and agriculture.
Thank you all for the time and energy you donate each week.
Simon, Katherine, Nik and Cara.
